Big Box Reuse

Slate has a very interesting pictorial essay of creative uses of surplus big box stores (from Julia Christensen's book Big Box Reuse) . We often think of "adaptive reuse" as a means of employing heritage buildings. I suspect the "heritage" of the 80's, 90's and early 2000's is going to include a huge inventory of big boxes. Imagine what we could do with them...

The Canadian Conference of the Arts stopped in Calgary on November 4,
2008 as part of a national tour to consult with the arts sector and its
supporters about how the CCA and the sector as a whole can work to
better position the sector in public discourse and on the political
agenda. A group of artists, cultural workers and arts champions
participated in a regional forum hosted by the CCA, and later that
evening the CCA's national director, Alain Pineau, delivered a short
speech and engaged in dialogue with leaders from the arts and corporate
sectors. The video of that speech is available here. For more
information about the regional forums being hosted by the Canadian
Conference of the Arts.

A poem for the journey through a budget process

Provisions

What should we have taken
with us? We never could decide
on that; or what to wear
or at what time of
year we should make the journey

So here we are in thin
raincoats and rubber boots

On the disastrous ice, the wind rising

Nothing in our pockets

But a pencil stub, two oranges
Four Toronto streetcar tickets

and an elastic band holding a bundle
of small white filing cards
printed with important facts.

- Margaret Atwood
