Youth Singers of Calgary Supports The Stephen Lewis Foundation and AIDS in Africa

Youth Singers support The Stephen Lewis Foundation as part of the 2008 Spring Production; “Stand Up - Make a Difference, Make a Change” on May 11th 2008 at The Jubilee Auditorium.

After the production of last year’s show, “Right Now”, we learned a great deal about all of our singers. We heard about their hopes, dreams and passions. We recognized that many of our singers see themselves as part of a bigger whole and want to make a difference in the world. We want to encourage this ambition, which is why we initiated this campaign.    read more »

Don't mess with them, they're Vikings

Peter Bjørn and Jøhn are pretty darned adørable, with thøse Swedish accents and anti-cøøl løøks, and I am happy tø repørt that they put øn lively shøw, in which they embraced the audience like a new-føund best friend. They are as charming and accessible as their søngs, and Friday's cøncert was feel-gøød evening øf handclaps and jumping up and døwn and barely discernable tales tøld in thick Swedish accents.  read more »

Madness Indeed

For a Shear Madness virgin, last night’s opening night performance really uncovered a mystery. The mystery of mystery theatre has never been clearer to me then after watching the sold out audience shout out clues and provide prompts for the totally high- energy cast of Shear Madness. As soon as I left the theatre I wanted to go right back in and see the show again to catch all of the details that my virgin mystery watching mind was not even aware I should be watching for. Like riding a rollercoaster, let’s go again! Complete madness.  read more »

Underground

I crammed into the Hi-Fi club with a few hundred others for the Gala screening of Wristcutters: A Love Story at the Underground Film Festival. The film was great, made even better by the ability to have beer and popcorn and by a good Tom Waits cameo. Way to go CUFF.

Although the Hi-Fi did the trick, it is far from ideal as a screening room. I eagerly anticipate the day when a festival like the Underground can afford to screen in an indy theatre venue either by a reduction of rates on our current film houses or by the creation of a new spot for screening in Calgary that is accessible to our film festivals.  read more »

Music for Contortionist strips away conventional norms and reveals the bloody heart beating within

Can you display to the world the blood and sinew and capillaries through the glass cabinet doors in your chest?  What will happen if you show people what is inside the sausage casing? Why are we obsessed with beauty?  Is it possible to truly reveal yourself and somehow survive the scrutiny?  How do you write a love song that is not sentimental?  These are some of the questions raised by Music for Contortionist, the latest offering from Sage Theatre, and they are questions that only serve to propagate yet more questions rather than allow themselves to be easily answered.  read more »

Blood Sunday: Tales from the Saville Inquiry

The Liffey Players tackled an astonishingly ambitious project when they took it upon themselves to produce Bloody Sunday: Tales from the Saville Inquiry.  The playwright, Richard Norton-Taylor gathered testimony from over 1000 inquiry witnesses, which he condensed into this courtroom drama.

This could not have been an easy play to produce and it is certainly not an easy play to watch.  There are a number of reasons for this.   read more »
