Today, nonprofits are becoming ever more important as demands for services are increasing and budgets in all sectors are dwindling. Some local and federal governments in the United States and Canada are employing the strategy of co-locating nonprofits under one roof in green nonprofit centers, where organizations can gain stability, save money in rent, and collaborate on shared back office services and programs. Hear from your colleagues who are building nonprofit centers in their districts as a strategy to revitalize blighted communities, stimulate economic activity, and provide services to their constituents in a more effective and efficient manner.

Get support from EMMEDIA for your next project!

EMMEDIA PRODUCTION ACCESS 2010
DEADLINE EXTENDED: MARCH 15, 2010

About Production Access:

Every year EMMEDIA supports artists in the community through our Production Access Programs. Support includes access to workshops, production equipment, post-production facilities, and professional mentorship through the production process of a media artwork. We encourage innovative and challenging work from a variety of artists working in various genres. Our support to media artists extends beyond those working in video to encompass diverse forms of time-based art including installation, documentary, narrative, animation, performance, new media, audio, and web-based projects.

Our goal is to support the growth and enable innovation in media arts production. We use each year as a benchmark for the quality and content we like to foster and see produced, continually raising the bar in our expectations of participants’ work at EMMEDIA.

Submission Theme:

Participants are encouraged to respond to the EMMEDIA 2010/2011 programming theme: Grain.

Emerging from the rubble of 2009’s CRASH! programming year, EMMEDIA’s upcoming programming thematic, Grain, assumes a generative focus. EMMEDIA takes this opportunity to critically reflect on its surroundings, moving through the fine grain of the city as a place, and from a regional, social and historical perspective. The United Nations has designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. In acknowledgement, EMMEDIA invites proposals that explore the implications of diversity and sustainability, in all its forms, from a regional perspective. Here, biodiversity is broadly understood, and extends also into explorations of biological / technological engagement, diversity of identities, media and representation.

In addition, we welcome considerations of other meanings of grain: grain of sand, grain of truth, going against the grain, whole grain, grain as a unit of measurement, the grain boundary, gold grains, fine grain sugar. Any interpretation of grain is welcome and creative interpretations are encouraged.

Scholarship / Bars ‘n’ Tone Programs

EMMEDIA has offered this program since 1984. The duration of these programs are roughly four months, running May 1 to September 15, 2010. There is no prerequisite for EMMEDIA production access programs. When developing your proposal, keep in mind that EMMEDIA will not select projects that require more than the four-month term to complete. Also, we only support projects with majority of the material produced through usage of our equipment and facility, and through direct work of the granted applicant. You can review details of EMMEDIA’s equipment and facility on our website: www.emmedia.ca

Scholarship Program:

Open to emerging artists that are creating productions in video, audio or new media for the first time. Scholarship Producers will receive three training workshops in production and post-production, as well as creative and artistic development, enabling them to create engaging and sophisticated first productions. Along with the three free workshops, successful applicants will receive a free one-year producer membership, up to $100 tape stock, up to $1500 in equipment rentals.

Bars ‘n’ Tone Program:

The Bars ‘n’ Tone Program is intended to support artists who have previously produced work and wish to continue their creative and technical development. The focus of the Bars ‘n’ Tone Program is on refining and enhancing existing skills. Successful applicants will receive a free one-year producer membership, up to $100 tape stock, up to $1750 in equipment rentals, and up to two free workshops.

Local Artist in Residence Program (AIR)

Each year, local artists are selected to create new works using EMMEDIA’s facilities. We encourage independent creative projects and research that explore the technologies of audio, video and new media. Applicants are asked to submit a proposal that includes a current CV, support material, project description and timeline, script, storyboard or treatment, formats to be used, detailed budget, and a description of a one-day workshop that the artist will facilitate. The Artist in Residence Program is open to more experienced artists and includes a free one year Producer membership, a $500 honorarium, as well as $300 in Tape Stock, with equipment and facility access up to $3000 value for one year. The Local Artist in Residence is expected to be available to the community throughout their term. An honorarium of $25/hour is paid for all workshops given as part of EMMEDIA programming.

Finishing Funds/Open Access Programs (ONGOING DEADLINE)

EMMEDIA will support artists with finishing projects with equipment access. One can apply at anytime. The number of projects supported is subject to funding and equipment availability.

The Biggest and Yummiest Event of the Year!

AGCcooks is a tasty celebration showcasing some of Calgary and area’s top Chefs in a friendly culinary competition. The Art Gallery of Calgary (The AGC) will be transformed into a kitchen stadium on Wednesday April 14, 2010 for our annual fundraiser. Each Chef will create a four-course feast utilizing a secret ingredient chosen by Calgary food writer and CBC restaurant critic John Gilchrist. Guests will dine on one of these exceptional meals, with each course being accompanied by fine wines expertly paired by the restaurant’s sommelier. All proceeds from the event will support the AGC’s renowned public and education programming (K-12).
