Calgary Poet Laureate Short List Released, Showcase Announced
- Posted February 8th, 2012
Calgary Arts Development and the Calgary Poet Laureate Selection Committee would like to thank all of the Calgarians who took the time to submit and/or support a nominee to be Calgary’s first Poet Laureate.
The short list of six nominees is:
- Derek Beaulieu
- Daniel Bennett, a.k.a. Transit
- Kris Demeanor
- Diane Guichon
- Tyler Perry
- Sheri-D Wilson
A volunteer selection committee representing artistic peers and literary community members weighed all aspects of the criteria for each candidate. Short listed nominees now are invited to move on to the Poet Laureate Showcase portion of the process.
The Poet Laureate Showcase is an opportunity for Calgarians to meet the diverse wealth of poetic talent in Calgary. On Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 7:00 - 9:00pm at Hotel Arts (119 12th Ave. SW), the free event will feature an evening of presentations and conversations with the Calgary Poet Laureate nominee short list. Hosted by Russell Bowers of CBC Radio’s Daybreak Alberta, the nominees will each present an example of their work, followed by a discussion of the unique contribution they hope to make in the inaugural term of the position and the value that the Calgary Poet Laureate will bring to our city.
Members of the public will also have an opportunity to suggest questions for the short list nominees to address at the event. Questions will be solicited through Calgary Arts Development’s Facebook and Twitter accounts (hashtag #yycpoet) as well as through an upcoming Daybreak Alberta episode.
Following the Poet Laureate Showcase, the Selection Committee will meet to deliberate and choose the first Calgary Poet Laureate. The Calgary Poet Laureate will be announced in April 2012.
Background information on all of the short list nominees is available at CalgaryArtsDevelopment.com/Calgary-Poet-Laureate.

Canadian Conference of the Arts Consultation Survey
- Posted February 2nd, 2012
The Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) was founded 66 years ago to represent the interests of all Canadian artists and cultural professionals at the federal level. It provides research, analysis and consultations on public policies affecting the arts and the Canadian cultural institutions and industries.
Recently, the CCA learned of the federal government’s decision to put an end to 35 years of financial support. Although not officially communicated, funding is currently scheduled to cease next March. In response, the CCA started a national consultation with its members, potential members and other stakeholders to validate its Board’s view that an organization like the CCA is a necessity for the Canadian cultural sector, and to explore interest in the specific services it can deliver.
The CCA held a consultation session in Calgary on January 31, 2012. As a follow-up to that session and to better understand your needs, the CCA invites you to take five minutes to answer a short questionnaire. A detailed list of proposed services is attached.
Calgary Arts Development Launches New Client Induction Grant Program
- Posted February 2nd, 2012
Calgary Arts Development today announced the New Client Induction Grant Program, developed to invest in arts organizations that are eligible, but not currently funded through Calgary Arts Development’s Operating Grant Program.
In November 2011, City Council responded to CADA’s request to deal with unprecedented demand from new clients representing diverse and emerging organizations through an increase to CADA’s annual base funding. In 2012, $175,000 will be available through the New Client Induction Program. The New Client Induction Program is open to all eligible arts organizations not currently funded by CADA, with priority given to diverse and emerging organizations.
“Calgary is an increasingly diverse city in the midst of dynamic change,” says Terry Rock, President and CEO of Calgary Arts Development. “As the City of Calgary's designated arts development authority, we need to provide a set of programs that can respond to our changing city and enhance the artistic and public impact of Calgary's arts organizations and artists.”
A dedicated program for new clients enables Calgary Arts Development to plan for the future more effectively, while at the same time investing in organizations that often represent the next generation of artistic practice. The program also serves as a knowledge-building exercise for CADA, enhancing the ability to measure and communicate the impact of the arts on the long-term success of Calgary.
Applications to the New Client Induction Grant Program will be assessed within the context of the organization's mission, vision and mandate. An arms-length independent assessment panel comprised of artistic peers and community members will consider the applicant organization's plan for the year in which they are applying and their achievements during the previous year.
Applications and guidelines are available as of February 2, 2012 and the deadline for applications is 4:30pm, March 15, 2012. For more detailed information on the program’s guidelines, application and assessment criteria, please visit CalgaryArtsDevelopment.com/Induction_Grant.
