Calgary Culture.com is a free service provided by Calgary Arts Development to increase awareness of the local arts scene. The site and newsletter offer a one-stop source for information on arts and culture in Calgary, and reach thousands of people in Calgary and surrounding communities. January’s First Thursday celebration is tomorrow in the Cultural District

January’s First Thursday celebration, the monthly cultural crawl through the Cultural District, is January 7.

Running all day, January’s First Thursday event lineup includes music, theatre, visual art and restaurant deals and the launch of the 24th annual High Performance Rodeo.

Midway transforms the Centre Court of the EPCOR CENTRE into a high-flying carnival with sideshow vaudevillians, shadow puppets, laptop virtuosos, gypsies and an eclectic array of indie musicians. Read more »

Calgary’s High Performance Rodeo Festival begins this week

The 24th annual High Performance Rodeo, Calgary’s International Festival of the Arts, begins this Thursday, January 7.

Running until January 31, the Rodeo is the largest festival of its kind in Western Canada and features theatre, music, comedy, dance, film, visual art and more.

With over 30 events, highlights of the festival include One Yellow Rabbit’s creation Kawasaki Exit. Inspired by Japanese social networking sites, this new play is performed in English and Japanese by the award-winning One Yellow Rabbit ensemble. Read more »

The New Gallery opens its doors in its new location in Art Central on December 18. Shoppers can purchase unique artist-made ornaments for only $25 each.

The Alberta Printmakers’ Society Annual Members’ sale, Scratch & Bite, takes place on December 19. Shoppers can find mini 12”x12” or smaller original artwork created by both well-known and emerging local artists. Read more »

Flamenco troupe heats up Calgary this week

One of Canada’s most exciting and innovative new flamenco companies from Montréal, La Otra Orilla, heats up Calgary in From Spain to Calgary via Montréal, December 10 and 11 at the Arrata Opera Centre.

Comprised of dancer Myriam Allard and singer Hedi ‘El Moro’ Graja, La Otra Orilla offers audiences a repertoire of traditional flamenco song and dance refined by years of training and performance both in Spain and Canada.
 
Performing for two nights in Calgary with an additional show in Edmonton on December 12, La Otra Orillia has also been working the local flamenco community this past week, offering dance and singing workshops. Read more »

Calgary’s second PechaKucha Night is tomorrow, Thursday, December 3rd at 7:30pm at the Uptown Stage and Screen.

Calgary Arts Development's December PechaKucha Night will revolve around the theme of ”How We Live Together.” Architects, planners, artists and other great minds will explore how cities become livable places and how the decisions we make today affect our future environmental, social and economic landscapes. Calgary’s Annual Disability Arts Festival showcases work from 100 disabled artists

Balancing Acts: Calgary’s Annual Disability Arts Festival celebrates its ninth year with the work of 100 artists this week.

The festival is a celebration of creative self-expression by emerging and professional artists with developmental, physical or sensory disability, mental illness, brain injury and/or chronic illness.

Examining themes of gender, sexuality, race and disability, over 100 disabled artists from Alberta, B.C., Ontario and California will showcase their work through five visual art exhibitions and 25 spoken word, theatre, film and creative writing performances. Read more »

Grey Cup Festival to spotlight the work of local artists, designers and musicians

Amidst a sea of green, this weekend’s Grey Cup Festival will spotlight the talent of Calgary artists, designers and musicians.

Enmax Illuminate Calgary, an extraordinary display of light installations, will light up the Cultural District on November 27 and 28 from 5-11pm. The light festival showcases the talents of Calgary-based artists and designers and will light up 20 buildings on both sides of Stephen Avenue from the Epcor Centre to 2nd St SW.

The light installations feature projection and interactive elements including a piece called Fortune Teller, which invites viewers to text their mood to be displayed on a stock ticker, and Bolt of Lightning, where lights are controlled with a mini keyboard. Read more »

PechaKucha Night #2: How We Live Together

Following the success of Calgary's inaugural PechaKucha Night, Calgary Arts Development presents PechaKucha Night #2: How We Live Together.

Devised and shared by Klein Dytham Architecture in 2003 as a place for designers, developers and architects to meet, network and show their work in public, PechaKucha Nights are now taking place in 256 cities around the world. The format is simple: speakers present 20 slides each, for 20 seconds per slide. Calgary Arts Development has secured the rights to PechaKucha Nights in Calgary and will be hosting 4 PechaKucha Nights over the course of the year.

The theme for the December 3rd PechaKucha Night is “How We Live Together.” Presenters include:
