Calgary’s arts scene offers tricks and treats like seedy Parisian nightlife, zombies and aliens as part of this week’s must-see Halloween lineup.
Over the years, Hollywood has created countless ghoulish monsters, aliens, superheroes and fairytale characters. Trick-or-treat with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra with music from Spiderman, Hook, E.T. and Fantasia.
Visit the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts on November 1st for the Day of the Dead celebration. Join Calgary’s Mexican community and participate in meeting La Catrina, a female skeleton and one of the icons of the tradition, take part in a parade, the creation of a traditional altar and interactive activities and games for all ages. International pianists come to Calgary to compete for world-class prize

Beginning tomorrow, international pianists from 12 countries will be competing in the Honens International Piano Competition for a prize valued at more than $500,000, in addition to $100,000 in cash prizes.
Twenty-one pianists from Canada, China, Ecuador/Spain, Hong Kong, Israel, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States will compete during the event.
The competition, beginning October 22 and running until November 6, is one of the world’s most prestigious events of its kind and offers lucrative career development programs. The series includes over 50 concerts including nine free community events.
In addition to its triennial competition, Honens presents its winners on the world’s top concert stages and brings leading international musicians to Calgary for exclusive Canadian performances. Read more »

Calgarians and artists from around the world share their stories during this week’s culture lineup

Calgarians take part in sharing stories this week with the launch of this year’s WordFest, the 2nd Annual Home Movie Day and Glenbow Museum’s one minute video challenge.
WordFest starts up again with 60+ literary events featuring 11 Albertan authors, 57 authors with Canadian ties as well as writers from Australia, France, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Pakistan, Sierra Leone and Spain.
This year’s festival includes the collective creation of a 150 metre-long poem, the inclusion of Web 2.0 events, the expansion of the Spanish language events as well as the expansion of Festival des mots, the francophone and Francophile component of the festival. Read more »

Calgary’s arts scene offers unique cultural experiences in this week’s event lineup. From Bugs Bunny to urban dance, those looking for a novel experience will find it in Calgary’s arts and culture scene.
The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra partners with Warner Brothers to provide the live soundtrack to Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and the whole cartoon gang, with cartoons projected on the big screen at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.
Visit the Art Gallery of Calgary, Trepanier Baer, Newzones, Paul Kuhn, Weiss Gallery, and Axis Contemporary Art - all in one afternoon. The Art Gallery of Calgary offers a guided walking tour of the downtown galleries this Saturday. Read more »

Calgary Arts Development requests holiday season arts event submissions and images for a seasonal promotional campaign. These events will be promoted through CalgaryCulture.com and through Travel Alberta's "Christmas in Calgary" campaign, which will reach out to regional tourism markets with print, radio and outdoor advertising.

LiveRush Program Offers Discounted Tickets to Students

Students are in school, the fall arts season is in full swing and Calgary Arts Development (CADA) is busy promoting the LiveRush program!
By offering low cost (usually $20 and under), last minute tickets to arts and culture events, LiveRush aims to develop audiences and provide high school and post-secondary students with a wide variety of arts choices at affordable prices. CADA advertises the program to students through partner promotions, online content and email newsletters, posters in high schools and on post-secondary campuses and ads in post-secondary daytimers.
