Calgary shows off the strength, diversity and quality of its arts scene with a wide range of arts and culture events happening during the final week of the city's Culture Month celebrations.
Whether it’s dance, film, live music, opera, textiles or theatre, there’s something for everyone in this week’s arts and culture lineup.
The Saddledome hosts His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who will speak about compassion and social responsibility.
Shakespeare buffs get a new perspective of William’s life – through the eyes of a dog from Alberta Theatre Projects.
Improv fans can head out for Calgary’s second annual International Improv Festival and experience the quick wit of teams from Los Angeles, Vancouver and Edmonton. Read more »
Nuvo Hotel Suites Offers Visiting Creatives a Free Hotel Stay

Culture is integral to any great city, and Nuvo Hotel Suites wants to give something back to traveling creators whose presence contributes to a more interesting Calgary! Beginning in October 2009, Nuvo Hotel Suites and Calgary Arts Development will partner to offer visiting artists and creators the opportunity to be awarded a free stay in a suite at Nuvo, located in the heart of the Beltline and in proximity to many of the city’s arts venues.
Nuvo Hotel Suites strongly believes in the need for artistic diversity in Calgary, and the city’s 160+ arts organizations and dozens of annual festivals give creative visitors reason to seek out the city. Nuvo’s Director of Marketing, Sarah Webb says, “The design of the suites at Nuvo is unique to the Calgary hotel scene, and is ideal for visiting artists. With a modern, clean design and complete kitchens in the hotel suites, those in town for a creative purpose can feel at home.”
One visiting creative will be awarded a free stay each month, chosen from proposals submitted to Nuvo Hotel Suites. In addition to complimentary accommodations at Nuvo, visiting creatives will benefit from being profiled on the Nuvo Hotel Suites blog as well as on CalgaryCulture.com, a newly launched website from Calgary Arts Development that serves as a central hub for information about the city’s arts and culture scene.

Calgary plays host to top cultural talent this week

Calgary plays host to some of the world’s top cultural talent this week with the launch of an outstanding fall arts lineup.
Calgary’s artists and arts organizations have made for an amazing Culture Month in our city as seen in the last few weeks. This week their international reach and network is highlighted.
The Calgary International Film Festival’s Mavericks program brings 10 of the most progressive filmmakers on the global circuit to Calgary, and Theatre Junction GRAND presents Orpheus and Eurydice from Montreal’s Compagnie Marie Chouinard.
Judy Chicago, a living legend of feminist art is in Calgary celebrating the launch of her exhibition at the Art Gallery of Calgary, and Thom Mayne of Los Angeles’ Morphosis Architects kicks off the launch of The University of Calgary's Design Matters Series. Read more »

Calgary Arts Development, in collaboration with Nur Films, presents a free workshop for arts organizations on how to create effective support material. Lead by Ramin Eshraghi-Yazdi, the workshop will cover:
- Opportunities and challenges with creating support material when applying for public funding
- Resources for documentation offered by EMMEDIA, including a tour of the EMMEDIA space
- How to effectively document art on a budget
- The basics of releases, including when they are necessary and tricks for avoiding them with large-scale public events

Calgary's first-ever PechaKucha was last night!

Calgary joins 226 cities around the world in bringing together our first-ever PechaKucha Night. Devised and shared by Klein Dytham Architecture in 2003 as a place for designers, developers, and architects to meet, network, and show their work in public, the format is simple: speakers present 20 slides for 20 seconds each slide.
Calgary’s first PechaKucha Night revolved around the theme of ‘creative spacemaking’ and were presented by a dynamic list of 12 cultural space creators including Artscape Toronto's President and CEO Tim Jones and Toronto Brickworks chief architect Joe Lobko, Partner with du Toit Allsopp Hillier I du Toit Architects Limited.

Calgary Arts Development is pleased to announce that Calgary’s first PechaKucha Night will take place at Theatre Junction Grand on September 14th at 6:30 pm, as part of Calgary's Culture Month celebration.
Calgary joins international centres around the world in bringing together our first-ever PechaKucha Night. Devised and shared by Klein Dytham Architecture in 2003 as a place for designers, developers, and architects to meet, network, and show their work in public, PechaKucha Night is now taking place in 226 cities around the world. The format is simple: speakers present 20 slides for 20 seconds each slide. Pecha Kucha is properly pronounced 'peh-CHAK-cha' and is Japanese for 'chatter' or the sound of conversation.
