Key Dates in the Municipal Decision Making Process for Support to the Arts
The following dates are integral for the level of investment flowing through Calgary Arts Development's restructured granting programs and the next steps in our long term strategy to add to Calgary's inventory of art spaces. In keeping with our commitment to transparency and community engagement, we are taking this opportunity to inform the community of important steps in the decision making process surrounding municipal support for the arts.
City Council will soon be making a three year budget decision. Calgary Arts Development has recently set a target for Calgary to be investing $10M in the arts annually through our granting programs within 10 years (by 2018). In our submission to the current budget cycle (2009 to 2011), we have recommended that City Council increase its investment by a total of $1.4M in base funding (from $3.5M to $4.9M annually). We have also recommended that City Council agree to support the tremendous growth in artistic creation by providing one-time project funding.
Over the past 2 years, Calgary Arts Development has been developing and now implementing a long term strategy to increase the amount of space dedicated to the arts in our city. On November 5th, we formally present our first set of recommendations to City Council.
