The real thing, the kinda real thing, and the electronic version...

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened their Reading Room today. The site offers ten exhibition catalogues, mostly from the 1960s, that 'definitively placed contemporary art from Southern California on the national map or furthered the dialogue between Los Angeles and New York.'
Although seeing these amazing works on your computer monitor is not optimal, for someone researching the work of a particular artist, it's a far cry better than ordering back catalogues (if available) or turning to a site like Abe Books to find rare editions that may be available through used book sellers.
Calgary's New Gallery has been working to digitize artist resources for some time now. Their Resource Centre offers an Online Database of exhibits and catalogues. As we can see through LACMA's use of the Reading Room to illustrate their cities place in the US contemporary art scene, TNG is taking an important step to share the leading role that Calgary's artist-run centres have played in Canada's contemporary art scene.
