Terry T. Rock, PhD, President & CEO
Dr. Terry Rock has held numerous strategic leadership roles over the past 14 years. His experience covers a broad spectrum of sectors, including: Agri-Food/Biotech, Software/Internet, Professional Services, Arts, Consumer Goods, Media, Government, and the Non-Profit sector. Dr. Rock has worked with top managers and boards of organizations ranging from one-person start-ups through to one of the world’s largest multinationals.
Formerly an Assistant Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Calgary, Dr. Rock’s research focused on the processes by which organizations develop competitive advantage and continue to create value in turbulent times. At the City of Calgary, Dr. Rock worked on a range of issues related to government/non-profit partnerships. In his 20-month tenure, he led two initiatives: the development of a comprehensive partnership accountability framework and the development of a new civic arts policy.
Dr. Rock has been the President of AIESEC Canada Inc. (the Canadian branch of the world’s largest student organization) and is immediate Past Chair of the Board of Directors. A member of the 2002 class of Leadership Calgary, he has a PhD in Management (Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation) from Texas Tech University, and a Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) in Marketing from the University of Saskatchewan.
Karen Ball, Director of Community Investment

Karen Ball is responsible for the development and direction of CADA's granting programs. She is also actively enged in supporting the development of arts infrastrucutre through developing and directing infrastructure prioritization programs for City of Calgary investments and championing arts space builders.
Karen has been actively involved in arts and culture throughout the province including serving as Interim Director of Advancement at the Alberta College of Art + Deisgn where she worked on Stirring Culture and the President's Smart Night and as Major / Special Gifts officer The Banff Centre where she raised support for the arts from donors across the country including through the Banff Midsummer Ball. As Executive Director of ArtsHabitat in Edmonton, Karen developed the first and only designated artist live/work housing in the city. She has also served as the Producer of The Works Art & Design festival in Edmonton and as a curator for the Ontario Craft Council. She holds a BAA from Ryerson University.

Mike Scullen, IT and Special Project Coordinator
Mike Scullen looks after Calgary Arts Development's information systems, including its website. Mike has a BA from the University of Regina in English and has studied Visual Fine Arts at the University of Calgary. Having a strong inclination towards technology and communication, Mike has been a prolific web publisher and is especially interested in the explosion of creative culture that is happening online and how this is influencing local trends.
Mike appreciates and attempts to synthesize ideas from a wide variety of sources. A self proclaimed generalist, Mike is a photographer, digital artist, and musician in addition to having experience with the technical aspects of web development and information technology. Read more »
Lauren Simms, Program Coordinator, Granting
Lauren Simms is responsible for the coordination and general operations of Calgary Arts Development's granting programs, as well as developing and maintaining the online grant interface.
Prior to joining Calgary Arts Development, Lauren worked as Office Assistant to the Visual Resource Centre’s Curatorial team at the University of Calgary, taught classical ballet to children at Fun ‘n’ Dance (a community based dance school), and briefly served on the board of the Alberta Printmakers’ Society. While completing her B.F.A. Honours in Printmaking at the University of Calgary, Lauren volunteered as a print and installation assistant to visiting artists, Vice President of Finance for the University of Calgary Developmental Arts Society (D.A.R.T.S.), President of the U of C Art Club for Printmakers and President of the 2008 B.F.A. Graduating Class.
As a visual artist and filmmaker, Lauren has shown locally in group and solo exhibitions and in June 2009 Lauren exhibited for the first time internationally in a group print exhibition in Kyoto, Japan. Read more »
Julie Baratta, Executive Assistant & Office Manager

Julie Baratta works as Executive Assistant to the President and CEO and provides support to Calgary Arts Development's staff as Office Manager. As a recent graduate of the Alberta College of Art + Design, with a BFA in Fibre, she also works to maintain her role as a textile artist.
As a textile artist, Julie has exhibited locally in group exhibitions and has appeared in such publications as Ornamentum, Canadian Decorative Arts, as well as Fibre Arts Magazine, Contemporary Textile Art and Craft. Her main interests lie in decorative and hand printed textiles, installation and production. As a founding member of Contextural: a fibre arts cooperative, Julie is helping to build a community of textile artists that fosters a cooperative creative environment in support of the production of new artistic works, and as a way to raise awareness of fibre arts in Calgary. Lindsay Bowman, Program Coordinator, Marketing & Communications

Lindsay Bowman assists in implementing Calgary Arts Development's marketing and communications strategies and serves as editor of our Calgary Culture newsletter and website. Before joining Calgary Arts Development, Lindsay worked and volunteered at CJSW 90.9FM in various capacities, including as Office/Volunteer Coordinator, Funding Drive Coordinator and as an on-air music and spoken programmer. She currently sits on CJSW's Programming Committee and hosts a weekly on-air music program.
Lindsay has also worked as a freelance writer for several local publications, mainly writing about music, film and the arts in Calgary. She holds a BA in English from the University of Calgary.
