New Research on Arts Facilities Released

A comprehensive report detailing the state of arts facilities in Calgary has been released by Calgary Arts Development and is available here. The research indicates that arts facilities such as performance halls, music venues, and art galleries, as well as spaces used for rehearsals and artist studios are in short supply in Calgary. The result is constrained growth and negative impacts on the arts and culture sector. Read more »

The Arts and The Art of City Making

The following appeared in the Calgary Herald Editorial Section on March 23, 2007: Has Calgary reached a 'crisis of aspiration'? For a number of reasons, I'm inclined to say "Yes, we have!" Travel Alberta is producing a summer / fall events guide. Listings are free. Call to Youth Artists in Calgary

The City of Calgary Public Art Program has recently become involved in the Calgary-Phoenix Sister Cities Committee through Calgary Economic Development (CED). As part of our role in strengthening Calgary's relationship with Phoenix, and their vibrant and thriving arts community, we are happy to promote the 2007 International Youth Artists Competition. This year's competition invites youth, age 13 - 18, from all ten of Phoenix's sister cities (including Calgary), to submit original artwork that interprets the theme "Do We Live in an Open and Accessible World for All?” Read more »

Calling all "Creative Calgarians" ...We Need Your Stories!

Calgary Arts Development's Creative Calgarians campaign kicked off today with a visit from Canada Council for the Arts Director Robert Sirman and a special performance from local singer-songwriter Kris Demeanor.

In celebration of their 50th anniversary, the Canada Council challenged Canadians to participate in 50 arts activities this year - anything from spending an afternoon colouring with the kids to attending Calgary Opera's world premiere of Frobisher. To help support this great initiative, Calgary Arts Development is launching an awareness-building campaign to get Calgarians thinking about their participation in the arts and to build excitement about the city's growing arts scene. Governor General's Visit Highlights Calgary's Local Arts Scene

During their second visit to Alberta, their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond, along with their daughter Marie-Éden, spent some time in Calgary from January 25 to 27 taking part in a variety of activities involving youth and the local arts scene . The Governor General led a discussion with 50 young Calgary artists, held at Quickdraw Animation Society, around how the arts can be used to reach out to marginalized youths and create stronger communities. Quickdraw Animation Society's Youth Animation Project program welcomes all youth, including immigrant youth, Aboriginal youth, street-involved youth, and others who face barriers to employment. Participants receive animation & employment training and are paid full-time minimum wage. Read more »

Now accepting grant applications for 2007

Calgary Arts Development is now accepting applications for its 2007 Special Projects and Annual Operating Grants, formerly operated under the Calgary Region Arts Foundation (CRAF). The deadline for applications to the Annual Operating Grants program is January 31, 2007. There are three opportunities to apply for Special Project Grants in 2007: deadlines are January 2, May 1, and October 1.

Organizations that received CRAF grants in 2006 will receive application forms and guidelines in the mail starting early next week. New applicants should visit our granting page where they will find more information on Calgary Arts Development's granting programs. New applicants will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire to help assess their eligibility for the program, and they will be contacted shortly after that with more information on submitting an application. Director of Grants and Community Relations Hired

Calgary Arts Development is pleased to announce that Karen Ball has been hired as Director of Grants and Community Relations to lead and manage the organization's new responsibility in investing in the community through the allocation of municipal arts grants.

Karen Ball, currently the Interim Director of Advancement at the Alberta College of Art & Design(ACAD), will begin her position at Calgary Arts Development in late January. In addition to her last year at ACAD, Karen brings with her a long resume of achievement, including the creation of Arts Habitat, an artist live/work development in Edmonton, serving as the Executive Director of The Works Art & Design festival in Edmonton, and several successful years in fund development at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Poll Results

Calgarians Want Municipal Funding for the Arts and Culture on Par with Funding Levels in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver

A recent public opinion poll commissioned by Calgary Arts Development, revealed that two-thirds of Calgarians (67%) believe that the City of Calgary should aim to be ranked in the top three cities in Canada, when ranked on the amount of municipal support provided by the City for arts and culture. Currently, the top three cities are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Read more »
